Management, Tourism and Research on Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary
After rebuilding the island’s tourism and research infrastructure and building community support for the Wildlife Sanctuary, EFA is supporting community development for the communities who own Tiwai Island and ongoing maintence of the island’s infrastructure.
The Tiwai Island Administrative Committee (TIAC), a consortium of environmental organizations, community leaders, academic institutions and government officials, officially manages the island.
EFA is working to raise TIAC’s capacity to attract visitors to the island. Njala University College leads the development of the research station. The University is seeking partnerships with researchers and institutions both within Sierra Leone and abroad. Already graduate students from Sierra Leone and beyond have completed research on the island in conservation biology, anthropology and botany.
